Tenure & Promotion

Tenure and promotion are important milestones in an academic career. The process recognizes a faculty member’s contributions to teaching, research, and service, and provides long-term academic stability and career progression.

The procedures and criteria for tenure and promotion are outlined in the DFA Collective Agreement and in university policies. The Dalhousie Faculty Association supports members throughout the process and can provide advice if questions or concerns arise.

What Is Tenure?

Tenure is a form of continuing academic appointment that provides long-term job security and academic freedom. It recognizes a faculty member’s demonstrated record of achievement and their ongoing contributions to the university.

Tenure decisions are based on a comprehensive review of a faculty member’s work, typically including:

  • Teaching and supervision
  • Research or scholarly activity
  • Academic and professional service

What Is Promotion?

Promotion refers to advancement to a higher academic rank. For many faculty members, the most common promotion pathway is:

  • Assistant Professor → Associate Professor
  • Associate Professor → Professor

Promotion decisions are based on a faculty member’s achievements and contributions across teaching, research, and service.

How the Tenure & Promotion Process Works

The tenure and promotion process typically includes several stages of review.

Departmental Review

Applications are first reviewed within the member’s department or academic unit. Committees evaluate the candidate’s record of teaching, research, and service.

Faculty-Level Review

The application then moves through faculty-level committees and administrative review.

Final Decision

Final decisions are made according to the procedures outlined in the Collective Agreement and university policies.

Throughout this process, evaluation focuses on the candidate’s overall academic contributions and professional achievements.
