Accommodations
The DFA supports members in navigating workplace accommodations, workload adjustments, and related provisions under the Collective Agreement and human rights legislation.
This page provides an overview of accommodation options available to faculty, as well as guidance on how to navigate both personal accommodations and student accommodations.
Workplace Accommodations
Faculty members may request workplace accommodations for reasons including:
- Disability or medical needs
- Pregnancy
- Family status or caregiving responsibilities
- Religious observance
Accommodations are typically arranged in collaboration with the university and may include adjustments to workload, scheduling, or work environment.
The goal of accommodation is to support members in fulfilling their roles while addressing individual needs in a fair and reasonable way.
Workload Adjustments & Leave
In some cases, accommodations may involve changes to workload or access to leave provisions under the Collective Agreement.
This may include:
- Temporary or ongoing workload adjustments
- Medical or other approved leave
- Modified duties or responsibilities
The specific approach will depend on individual circumstances and the relevant provisions of the Collective Agreement.
How to Request an Accommodation
If you require an accommodation:
- Start by speaking with your Department Chair, Head, or Director
- You may also need to work with the appropriate university office (e.g., HR or accessibility services)
- Documentation may be required, depending on the nature of the request
If you have questions or concerns at any stage, the DFA can provide guidance and support.
Student Accommodations
Faculty members are also responsible for supporting student accommodations in their teaching.
Student accommodations are typically coordinated through Dalhousie’s accessibility or student services offices and may include:
- Exam accommodations
- Assignment extensions
- Classroom or participation adjustments
Faculty are expected to implement approved accommodations, while maintaining academic standards.
If you have questions about how to apply student accommodations in your courses, you can contact the relevant university office or reach out to the DFA for guidance.
